Member in Focus : Rachel Tomlinson
In our new feature, Festival in Focus, Hillside sits down with a person involved with the Festival and chats to them about their experiences. Up first is Rachel Tomlinson, who is on the Festival's Board of Directors and currently works as the Chair of the Marketting Committee.
Hillside Festival: What drew you to Hillside in the first place?
Rachel Tomlinson: My parents started taking me to Hillside as a little one and I have so many great memories of running around, getting my face painted, making lifelong friends, and learning to appreciate music. It was the highlight of my summer!
What role did you assume as a volunteer and what did you like about it?
I started volunteering in the Hillside Merch tent when I was in high school and after three years as a volunteer, I eventually coordinated the area with my sister for 4 years. I loved this role because I was able to get a sense of the Hillside experience through my interactions with patrons and fellow volunteers. I also loved opening the boxes and seeing what merchandise we would be selling that year! I was never able to last the weekend without buying something for myself. I eventually left this coordinator position to pursue a role on the board of directors.
What is your role on the board and within the organization?
I've been able to draw upon my many years of experience attending and volunteering at the festival to inform my work on the board of directors and committees. I am currently the chair of the Marketing Committee for the festival, which is a dynamic group of experts from the community who weigh in on the Festival's marketing and branding. I am proud to chair this talented group, who respond to the ever changing marketing climate with great skill. I also chair the Craft Vending committee, which works together to decide what kinds of craft vendors Hillside patron's might like to see at our summer festival.
What does the future hold for you at Hillside? What do you hope to do?
I hope to continue to learn from festival patrons and volunteers so I can best represent them at board and committee levels. This year in particular, I am looking forward to having a different kind of Hillside experience as a new mom (I'm due early July)! I can't wait to show this baby the magic that Hillside has to offer.
