Hillside Summer Festival 2014
July 25 - 27
With three JUNO nominations, the Polaris Prize long list and ten albums under his belt, Danny Michel is unquestionably one of the finest and most charming songwriters ever to grace the stage. His honest and thoughtful lyrics, earnest live performances and witty stage banter have earned him a devoted global fan base. A musical chameleon, Michel is able to slip into many genres with ease. As his fans will attest, he is a spontaneous & fearless performer. On his 2010 release he encouraged fans from around the world to submit their own pieces of recordings for the record. As a result, sections of songs feature parts played and sung by fans, some he’s never even met. On his birthday that same year, Michel made his entire catalogue of music free for download for the day in thanks.
Danny is a true Canadian. No scandals or rock’n roll stories here. Instead you’ll find his name linked to people like David Suzuki, Stuart McLean or Chris Hadfield. In the past critics have praised Danny’s lyrics which have something to say without coming off preachy. Topics range from the environment (“Feather, Fur & Fin") to big questions ("If Gods' on your side, then who's on mine"). Others ask “Who’s Gonna Miss You when you’re gone?” a song which explores karma asking “Did you live it right?/did you live it wrong?”. Others urge listeners to “find that spark” and ask “…my generation’s reaching for your hand/won’t you open up your heart and minds to them?”
“What Colour Are You” (a song about a mood ring) is the opening gem on Danny's more recent album "Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me" which was recorded entirely in Belize with The Garifuna Collective, a unique Afro-Amerindian cultural group. Quoted as "One of the finest musical works of our time" By Billboards Larry Leblanc “Black Birds” dives into the waves of Belize’s musical deep, featuring Maya guitar, turtle shells, donkey jaw-bone and traditional Garifuna segunda and primero drums. Michel cultivates lush rhythms and sounds as the perfect backdrop for his buoyantly eloquent songwriting style. The album landed him a 3rd him another JUNO nomination (this time on the world music category) and a sold out summer tour of North America with a 10 piece band.
When Michel is not on the road or recording his own music he shares his production skills with other talent and is quickly making a name for himself as a producer and mixer. He also founded the Danny Michel Ocean Academy Fund to help raise scholarships for the Caye Caulker Community School, a small non-profit community high school in Belize. To date he's raised over $60,000.00 for the school and volunteers there when he can. , At the moment Danny is sitting in front of a blank canvas contemplating where his next album is going to take him. It could go anywhere from here. Knowing Danny, wherever it goes – it will be an adventure.them?”
