Hillside Inside 2018
February 10 - 11
Janice Jo Lee
Janice Jo Lee is a Korean-Canadian, folk musician, spoken word poet and theatre artist rooted in Kitchener, on Haldimand Treaty territory. She is a hard femme queer radical passionate about building flourishing communities based in justice and joy through art. She is interested in the question: “As a storyteller, what is my responsibility to my ancestors and community?” Lee has toured across Canada with her albums Drown the Earth (2013) and Sing Hey (2016).
She was the City of Kitchener’s Artist in Residence in 2015, and created a community-based cinepoetry project called Folk Myths of Kitchener. In Waterloo Region, Lee curates and produces for KW Poetry Slam and Rainbow Reels, and co-directs the MT Space Young Company. Readers of the Community Edition voted her Best Performance Artist and Best Local Musician 2017.
This year will see the release of The Legend of Sing Hey, a documentary-musical about Lee’s journey, her third studio album Ancestor Song, and a remount of her one-person musical satire Will You Be My Friend.
